Spiders in San Diego: What Spiders Live Near You?

In San Diego there are two spiders that you need to watch out for, the Brown Widow, Black Widow and the Desert Recluse. If you’ve ever stumbled across these creatures and managed to walk away unscathed then consider yourself lucky. While their appearance is frightening their bite is much worse.

These are the spiders you want to avoid at all costs.

The Brown Widow

Surprisingly, this spider was not normally in our area until around 2000 but since there has become a common site in many areas. Similar to the Black Widow the Brown Widow Spider has its hourglass marking is on the underside of its abdomen and is orange in appearance. With a muted brown color to its body it’s easy to tell the difference between this spider and the Black Widow.

The Black Widow

Possibly the most famous spider, it’s known for being quite dangerous and deadly. Many stories have pointed out the vileness of this spider so knowing it lives here in San Diego County is less than comforting. A single bite from the black widow can cause profuse sweating, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, muscle spasms, and difficulty swallowing.

With its black body and red hourglass marking on the underside of it’s abdomen it’s easy to spot and identify.

The Desert Recluse

Not to be confused with the Brown Recluse the Desert Recluse this brown spider is normally found in desert environments and is nocturnal so it only comes out at night. While most spiders have eight eyes the Desert Recluse only has 6.

If bitten there will be severe pain at the bite site after about four hours. Other symptoms can include vomiting, fever, and severe itching. Their bites are also known to cause open sores at the bite area that vary is size and shape.

Avoiding Spiders

Keeping these creatures away from you and your family is priority number one. With constant pest control measures you can ensure that you are doing everything you can to keep them at bay.

Another way to help keep them out of your home is to keep things picked up around your house and don’t allow random piles to accumulate in your yard. Take precautions when moving wood piles, and always wear shoes outdoors.
