California’s Most Invasive Spiders

The most invasive spiders in California are the brown widow spider, the black widow spider the desert recluse. These spiders are large and very noticeable, so if you have one in your home, you will definitely notice. These spiders thrive in warm climates, which is why they have spread throughout California.

The Brown Widow Spider

The brown widow spider was first found in California in 2000. Today, the species is common throughout Central and Southern California. The brown widow is originally from Africa although it does have established populations in parts of Australia, Japan and some Caribbean Islands.

The brown widow is a combination of tan and brown colors along with black accents. Its bite is very minor in comparison to that of a black widow, although humans can still experience painful symptoms. Headaches and nausea are very common if bitten by this spider, and some people need to be hospitalized because they lose consciousness.

The Black Widow Spider

The black widow spider can be found across the western regions of the United States and has been prominent in California for decades. Female black widows are very dangerous, are jet black and have a red marking on their abdomens. The male spiders are harmless and are commonly orange or tan.

Black widow spiders are quite timid and will usually run away from humans. However, they will bite if they feel threatened. Many people experience black widow bites when they accidentally step on a black widow or come too close to her eggs. If you are bitten by a black widow, you may experience nausea, vomiting, unconsciousness, headaches, and muscle cramps. You should seek medical attention right away.

The Desert Recluse

The desert recluse is the most common type of recluse found in California. While this species was originally discovered in Los Angeles, it is now established throughout Central and Southern California.

While these spiders are not aggressive by nature, you should be cautious around them. They tend to live in dark, quiet places, like basements and attics. They also like to live in clothing, and many people have experienced severe desert recluse bites when putting on an item of clothing that a spider is living in. If you get bitten by a desert recluse, you can experience blistering, chills, fever, nausea, and lesions. You should seek medical attention immediately.
