Few things can ruin time spent outdoors as much as being stung by bees or wasps. Stings are painful and uncomfortable. If you have an allergy, stings can quickly escalate into a serious medical issue. Put these tips to use to do your best to avoid being stung by bees and wasps.
Reduce Scents
Bees and wasps are pollinators. They seek out flowers for pollen, and they find flowers largely based on scent. Avoid wearing strongly scented body spray, perfume or cologne and opt for using unscented body lotion and deodorant.
Food can also entice bees and wasps to come around, so be careful if eating or bringing a drink outside. Sweet smelling sodas and juices attract bees, so pay attention to cups and opened bottles or cans.
Dress for the Conditions
Avoid wearing brightly colored clothing. Bees and wasps are drawn to brightly colored flowers, so avoid any confusion by wearing muted, light or dark-colored clothing. If you know you are going to be in an area prone to bees and wasps, then wear long sleeves and pants. This may not always be feasible or comfortable given the weather, but sleeves and pant legs will provide enough of a barrier to prevent bees and wasps from stinging.
Several studies have shown that bees tend to not sting people wearing hats. The theory is that furry animals are more likely to attack a hive and steal honey, so bees are more alert around furry animals. Bees may believe your head of hair makes you a threat, so cover up to show bees you are not a danger.
Stay Still
The best thing to do if a bee or wasp lands on you is to stay still. This can be hard to do, but sudden movements may cause the insect to go on the defensive. Slowly try to move away or gently blow on the bee or wasp in order to get it to move along.
Eliminate Colonies
Possibly, one of the best ways to ensure you and your family are not stung by bees and wasps is to make your home and outdoor space inhospitable to nests and colonies. Residential bee control ensures any nests found in your home or on your property are safely and humanely removed, keeping you and your family safe.
